He is an experienced and versatile barrister and solicitor that has been described in Who’s Who Legal Nigeria as being “a stand out lawyer, absolutely trustworthy and dependable” and listed in The Legal 500.
Notable & Recent Cases
- Folorunsho successfully represented one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions in the reported Court of Appeal case of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. v. Esther Kuti, a discovery and inspection banking appeal, where he received exceptionally high praise in the lead judgment for his research and brief-writing skills.
- In another reported Court of Appeal case – Dys Trocca Valsessia Ltd. v. Sanyaolu – he successfully defended reliefs he had obtained for minority shareholders mandating an investigation into the financial and general affairs of the named multi-billion Nigerian naira turnover construction company for being run in an illegal, oppressive and unfairly prejudicial manner.
- In the also reported ground-breaking KLM Royal Dutch Airlines v. Taher appeal, Folorunsho successfully canvassed a novel argument in favour of the Appellant airline, regarding the limitation of the Federal High Court of Nigeria’s jurisdiction to entertain denied boarding cases.
- He successfully defended the interests of Lloyds of London insurers in fatal accident multi-million US dollar litigations filed by the families of those that perished in the Dana Airlines crash that took place in Lagos in 2012.
- Folorunsho obtained judgment for Total Nigeria Plc. in a NGN10 billion libel suit filed against it by the chairman of a political party.
- Folorunsho represented Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. in a breach of construction contract appeal and had damages awarded by the lower Court against the bank set aside in toto.
- He recently successfully defended a former Nigerian international and European domestic footballer in a breach of promise of marriage and paternity law suit.
- He also recently obtained judgment for Shoprite (a leading South African supermarket chain in Nigeria) in a sensitive matter involving the Nigeria Data Protection Regulations, 2019.
Non-Contentious Matters
- Folorunsho is currently advising the London office of a major international insurance company regarding a multi-million US dollar reinsurance claim and subrogation issues connected thereto.
- He advised Lamb Weston, a well-known international food processing company regarding its joint venture business entry into the Nigerian market and drafted the relevant agreements necessary for that purpose.
- He advised a leading international specialty chemicals company on its proposed entry into Nigeria and adherence to the Nigerian Oil & Gas Industry Content Development Act, 2007 and other relevant legislation.
- Folorunsho was instructed by international insurers to attend Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana for the purpose of providing advice connected to insurance claims regarding damage to an aircraft.
- He advised ExecuJet International on the redraft of its standard Terms and Conditions for its Nigerian operations.
Education/Bar Admissions
Folorunsho obtained his undergraduate and masters law degrees from Cardiff Law School, University of Wales.
He was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1999 and the Bar of England and Wales (Honourable Society of the Middle Temple) in 2002.
Papers & Publications
He is the author or co-author of numerous articles that have appeared in local and international journals and publications such as Air and Space Law Journal, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s country report for Nigeria and Guardian Law.
He has also delivered papers on various issues to committees of Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives, the International Air Transportation Association (in Shanghai, China), at international seminars hosted by multi-national law firms etc.
